As autumn is well underway in Texarkana, the nights grow longer and newly fallen leaves crinkle underfoot. Yes, Halloween has passed: But with the crunch of leaves and a spooky chill hovering in the air, it is an ideal time to discover tales and locations of the haunts of downtown with a new project unlike standard haunted house fare.

The Haunted Texarkana Ghost Tour is a 90-minute, nighttime walking tour that is available every Saturday evening at the Lindsey Railroad Museum in Downtown Texarkana.

The Haunted Texarkana tour offers carefully researched and historically accurate stories along its tour route.

"I was a history major at Texas A&M Texarkana and graduated in May," said owner and tour guide Brandy Aaron. "It has been a very popular tour with lots of out-of-towners," she added. "We will continue doing the tours as long as people are interested through the end of the year, and people will be bringing relatives and friends during the holidays too."

The tour owner said the Haunted Texarkana Ghost Walk was started by her friend Tracy Prather in mid-2014, and her friend later asked her to take over the Haunted Texarkana Ghost Tour. Now, Aaron said she shares tour guide duties with Prather's son, Andrew Converse. "So now it is myself and her son, Drew, and it is working out great."

Brandy Aaron is employed by the Lindsey Railroad Museum and finished her degree in history as a mature student at Texas A&M Texarkana. Surprisingly, she is somewhat skeptical on the issue of ghosts. "The historian in me leans more to the history lessons of Texarkana, but I am a bit of skeptic as to the ghosts," she said. "However there are paranormal experiences and evidence that I cannot discount. It is what it is."

The tour's stated goal is: "Taking you deep into Downtown Texarkana's bloody heart to learn the authentic local history complete with whispering ghosts, dark shadows, ghastly crimes, cutthroat murders and eternally lost souls..."

People seem to like the tour if internet reviews are to be believed, and the Haunted Texarkana Ghost Walk was ranked #1 on the Trip Advisor top things to do in Texarkana chart. It was only displaced and sent to #2 by the Perot Theater in late October by someone who went on the tour and "enjoyed" it but was concerned about the amount of walking. However, the website does warn potential guests that it is a 1-mile walk on downtown Texarkana streets and alleyways. Of course, some sidewalks are better than others as well, but the group tries to make allowances for anyone who wants to come as long as they are over the age of 10.

The tour offers ticket holders the chance to use EMF meters and cold spot thermometers as they meandor through roughly a mile of Historic Downtown Texarkana.

As mentioned earlier, sidewalks and paved streets are mostly prevalent along the walking route. However, manual wheelchairs may confront mobility issues on certain streets along the tour route and powered chairs or scooters are encouraged. There are always at least 2 knowledgeable tour guides on hand to provide dialogue and to also ensure the safety of the tour participants. However, tour officials ask that participants dress appropriately - preferably in layers - and wear comfortable walking shoes. Minimum age is 10 years due to the adult subject matter, including the detail of violent crimes in Texarkana's past.

The doors of the Lindsey Railroad Museum open at 8 pm, and the Haunted Texarkana Ghost Walk Tour begins at 9 pm. Admission to the Haunted Texarkana Ghost Walk is $15 per person. Reservations are required and payment is at the door. Before the tour starts, participants are encouraged to walk around and view some of the varied historical offerings inside the Lindsey Railroad Museum, and this is included in the ticket price. As previously mentioned, visitors on the tour are also allowed the option of using some of the Haunted Texarkana ghost detecting equipment during the journey through Downtown Texarkana.
