The Shreveport Rafters Futbol Club is becoming a reality - much to the delight of even the smallest Shreveport-Bossier soccer players and fans. Greg Palmer, who has worked in local soccer for five years and previously in his native UK, was chosen as the coach for the inaugural season of the Rafters in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL). As the current CABOSA soccer U15-U18 director of coaching, Palmer is well known to many local soccer fans. But news of the new coach has also reached younger fans.

"We work with kids mostly ages 3-5, and this is just the type of thing that they are hearing about to pique their interest and make them excited about soccer," said Brett Barker, director of Soccer Shots of North Louisiana.

Barker attended Shreveport's Centenary College and played for its NCAA Division 1 team, and the Soccer Shots director said he was excited that the Rafters organization chose someone already known in the area to take the reigns of the Rafters Futbol Club.

"I think it will help open up the area to soccer even more," said Barker. "Anything that helps grow the sport of soccer in Shreveport is amazing, and to do something local is a great thing."

Barker also believes that the Rafters and its new coach, Greg Palmer, could indirectly help him in his tough task of encouraging young players to move into upper age group team soccer instead of switching to other sports, such as baseball and football. "This can help encourage the kids as a stepping stone to move them into a new age-bracket team atmosphere. Plus, it  builds passion and confidence in the sport," Barker added.

Coach Greg Palmer seems to understand the importance of his new position, and he said he was grateful to the Shreveport-Bossier community. "The family-oriented atmosphere, support I have received and the nice pace of life has helped make Shreveport a special home for me,” he said. “My goal is to rise in the coaching ranks and develop this market into the greatest soccer city we can become.”

While Coach Palmer's goals for the Shreveport club may seem lofty, the new Rafters coach knows all about futbol at the highest level. Palmer's father played for Chelsea F.C. in London - one of the most popular football clubs in the world. And by indirectly encouraging the sport of soccer with Rafters F.C. among the kids at Soccer Shots and other local organizations involving children, Coach Palmer is certain to see a heightened interest in local soccer and more local Ark-La-Tex residents who are children today playing for top clubs in next generation soccer.  Ark-La-Tex.com
