SE Highlights Its Large Native American Student Population and Offers Historical Native American Games On Special Day

Prospective Students and Native American Students Welcome At Southeastern Oklahoma State University

Native American high school students who will soon be heading to college should feel extra welcome during Southeastern Oklahoma State University's #SELive Open House, College Day and Native American Visitation Day on November 11, 2015. Another similar event will be held early next year on February 3, 2016.

"Thirty percent of our student body is Native American," said Alan Burton, Director of Communications for the university. Burton, who is the author of five Texana-related books, said stuents from Choctaw Nation make up the largest number of Native American students, followed by Chickasaw Nation and Cherokee Nation.

Besides taking part in visiting the campus, prospective Native American students will have the opportunity to participate in Native American Games. The historical game of stickball, which is also called The Little Brother of War, will be featured along with another interesting (and more social) game that historically was played to settle issues and disputes between Native American tribes instead of war.  This game will include both women and men.  Click here to register for Native American Student Visitation Day.

"When they come here in November, we will be having 'Native November' along with other Native American events going on across campus," Burton said. "It provides a good opportunity for Native American students to come on campus and see what the university has to offer and meet some students."

All future college students and their parents - not just people from Native American families - are welcome at the #SELive event. The entire campus is open, so future students can see the campus at work. For instance, prospective students can meet current students, attend a class, have a free meal and receive a free, special 'SE Sackpack.' Meetings with academic departments and the financial aid office will also be important parts of the event, according to Burton. Click here to register for the Open House event.

Director of Communications Burton said the Open House will be a "fun day" where parents and prospective students can come and go as they want. He said he expects people from around the Ark-La-Tex to attend, and the university has a diverse geographic population. For instance, approximately 20% of the university's students come from the state of Texas.

According to Burton, the goal of the event is to "throw open" the doors to Southeastern Oklahoma State University so future students can get a good representation about what life will be life getting a college education at the university. He added: "It's a great way to get the full experience in one day." Ark-La-Tex.com
